South Africa: Join Greenpeace Africa and Earthlife Africa to march for a nuclear-free South Africa
31 October 2012, All Africa URL: http://allafrica.com/stories/201210310943.html
Together with Earthlife Africa, we want to gather as many people as possible to show our support for a just energy solution. Please join us as we march to a nuclear-free future!
South Africa has some of the world's best renewable energy potential, but our government is still planning to introduce 9600MW of nuclear energy in the next 20 years.
This means building 6 new nuclear reactors along our coastlines.
Renewable energy is cheaper than nuclear power, reliable, abundant, will create thousands of sustainable jobs, and will help South Africa take meaningful action on climate change.
Renewable energy, like wind and solar power is what we should be investing in instead.
The reality is that nuclear energy is too expensive and far too dangerous.
The South African government's nuclear build programme is a threat to our democratic, political, social and economic rights.
Join us in demanding a just transition towards renewable energy, and call on government to:
stop its nuclear plans which threaten present and future generations
provide public scrutiny of the proposed costs of the nuclear programme
open the debate on nuclear expansion to all South Africans
Together with Earthlife Africa, we want to gather as many people as possible to show our support for a just energy solution.
Please join us as we march to a nuclear-free future!
